Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) by enforcing stringent environmental regulations, including the implementation of a law that prohibits human activities— such as farming—within 60 metres of water sources feeding the dam.

Deputy Minister in the Vice-President’s Office (Union and Environment), Mr Khamis Hamza Khamis, revealed this in the National Assembly yesterday while responding to a basic question from Donge MP, Mr Soud Mohamed Jumah (CCM), who asked about the government’s strategy for ensuring environmental sustainability around the JNHPP.

Mr Khamis said the government has undertaken various measures to strengthen environmental protection efforts in the area, including afforestation activities near water sources and continuous environmental education for surrounding communities.

“The government continues to enforce the National Guidelines on Sustainable Land Use, especially within the protected 60-metre buffer zone from water sources, and has also formed environmental committees to curb degradation at the water sources,” he said.

The Deputy Minister emphasised that the government remains committed to ensuring the longterm sustainability of the JNHPP, which is crucial for enhancing the country’s power generation capacity and supporting economic development.
