Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE bilateral trade volume between Tanzania and the United States (US) has more than doubled over the past four years, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen economic relations between the two nations.

The trade volume soared to 778.1 million US dollars (more than 2.01tri/-) between 2021 and 2024 from 380.2 million US dollars (987bn/-), a remarkable 104.7 per cent increase.

Tanzania’s Ambassador to the United States, Elsie Kanza said the surge is attributed to several key initiatives, including the establishment of the Tanzania American Chamber of Commerce (TACC) in 2023.

“This growth has also been driven by an investment incentive agreement with the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), which expanded access to financing for American companies interested in doing business in Tanzania,” she said.

Amb Kanza made the remarks on Monday in Dar es Salaam at the reception to welcome Mr Eric Johnson, the Mayor of Dallas-Texas, a visit organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in Tanzania (AMCHAM).

Tanzania’s exports to the US are dominated by agricultural commodities, minerals and textiles while imports from the United States include wheat, agricultural/ transport equipment, chemicals, used clothes and machinery.

Mayor Johnson’s trip marks his first-ever visit to Africa focusing on strengthening economic, social and cultural partnerships between the sister cities of Dallas and Dar es Salaam.

Dallas, one of the six wealthiest cities in the US boasts a GDP exceeding 688 billion US dollars.

In May last year, Mr Johnson officially inaugurated the Tanzania American Chamber of Commerce (TACC) in Dallas, which now serves as a key platform for enhancing trade cooperation between the two nations.

The Chamber tasked with overseeing the Tanzania Trade Office, inaugurated on the same day under the city’s ‘foreign trade offices initiative’ programme, aimed at further promoting and stimulating trade relations between Tanzania and the United States.

“Dallas and Tanzania have had a strong and growing relationship. The opening of a Tanzanian trade office was a milestone and I’m excited to further strengthen our ties and explore new opportunities for sustainable trade growth,” he said.

In addition, its strategic location as a major trade and logistics hub, it facilitates not only the distribution of Tanzanian products across the United States but also to neighbouring markets such as Canada and Mexico.

Today, Dallas and Dar es Salaam stand at the forefront of US-Africa trade, which has grown to over 70 billion US dollars annually in imports and exports.

AMCHAM Tanzania’s Chairman Mr Geofrey Mchangila said his visit in the country will open doors to new meaningful collaborations and economic opportunity, demonstrating the government’s commitment to international engagement.

“This visit also resonates with the United States’s evolving approach to the global engagement.

“The US government has laid out clear priorities for engagement with Africa priorities that align closely with Tanzania development agenda,” said Mr Mchangila.

The Director of International Trade and Economic Diplomacy at Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Ambassador John Ulanga, echoed for the need to build on this momentum.

“Despite the significant increase in trade volume between our countries, more must be done to expand this relationship further,” he said.

He urged that the ongoing efforts by both governments to strengthen commercial ties should continue particularly by enhancing investment education and raising awareness of available business opportunities.
