Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Tanzania (BAKWATA), Sheikh Alhaj Nuru Mruma, has urged Tanzanians to recognise the value of their votes, emphasising that a single vote can place an unfit leader in power.
Speaking to Daily News Digital in Dar es Salaam, Sheikh Mruma stressed the importance of dispelling the misconception that only certain individuals are responsible for choosing leaders, stating that every citizen has a significant role to play through their vote.
Additionally, Sheikh Mruma highlighted the damaging impact of corruption on the electoral process, noting that it influences voters’ decisions. He stated that leaders who are elected through corrupt means often lack integrity and fail to implement meaningful policies for citizens, unlike those chosen based on the merit of their policies, abilities, and honesty.
In another remark, Sheikh Mruma pointed out that while political shortcomings exist, they should not prevent elections from being free and fair. However, he emphasised the need to address such issues early on to avoid disrupting peace and the citizens’ right to participate in elections.
He also called on electoral authorities to ensure that all laws and procedures are strictly followed and that flaws within the electoral system are rectified ahead of the upcoming general elections.
Furthermore, he advised those authorities to provide comprehensive civic and voter education so that every citizen understands their role and responsibilities, which would help prevent unnecessary conflicts.
“We should prepare to enter the elections with hope and expect a peaceful process that will bring us leaders who can effectively guide us for the next five years,” said Sheikh Mruma.
