Africa-Press – Uganda. With just months remaining to the 2026 general elections, Kira Municipality is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched parliamentary races in the Greater Kampala area and the nation at large.
Incumbent Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda faces a high-profile three-way contest against George Musisi of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and Daniel Kananura of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
The constituency, one of the most urbanised and rapidly growing in Uganda, continues to attract a dynamic mix of new voters, developers, and commuters—factors analysts say could significantly influence the electoral outcome.
Ssemujju, who has represented Kira Municipality since 2011, is seeking another elective term in office. In the 2021 elections, he secured a commanding victory with 42,185 votes, winning in 185 out of 186 polling stations.
Speaking during an exclusive interview with NBS Television on Monday, Ssemujju expressed confidence that his record of service and grassroots connection will deliver him another decisive win.
“We have over 200,000 voters in Kira, but in past elections, only half of those have turned out to vote. The new voters—many of them in secondary schools are actually more excited about Ssemujju than the old ones. They understand the roles of Members of Parliament better than those who are making commentaries. In my view, there is no stiff competition in Kira; it’s a figment of imagination rather than reality,” he said.
The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) Spokesperson added that with about 300 polling stations now established in the constituency, he is confident of sweeping victory across all of them.
“Competence is not measured by academic qualifications but by the ability to deliver results. The NRM candidate says he will cheat, the NUP candidate says he has been sent, but none of them have come out to say they will actually do the work of Ssemujju,” he said
On the other hand, George Musisi, a prominent human rights lawyer and legal defender for NUP members and other opposition figures, is positioning himself as the change Kira needs. Musisi was declared NUP’s flagbearer after a competitive vetting process in which he defeated Jimmy Lukwago (Kira Young), who represented the party in 2021.
Musisi underscored his determination to amplify the municipality’s voice in Parliament.
“Kira deserves a stronger voice in Parliament one that truly represents the aspirations and concerns of its people. Our community’s issues have often been sidelined, and I am stepping forward to ensure Kira’s priorities are firmly placed at the forefront of national debate,” Musisi said, shortly after his nomination.
NUP officials have described Musisi as a principled and dedicated advocate who embodies the party’s vision for accountable leadership and community empowerment.
Representing the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Daniel Kananura is expected to rally the party’s base in Kira as the government continues to promote its development agenda in Kira.
Though less publicly vocal than his rivals, NRM insiders say Kananura’s campaign will focus on service delivery, infrastructure improvement, and youth employment—core pillars of the party’s message heading into 2026.
The race for Kira Municipality is expected to be one of the most closely watched parliamentary contest placing seasoned opposition figures against emerging leaders and ruling party loyalists.
