A 19-year-old man is among the three suspects arrested for the murder of a special police constable in Kabale District in western Uganda.

SPC Garalious Barykabu, 58, was attacked on the night of January 27, 2021 as he guarded the Electoral Commission (EC) offices on Makanga hill, Kabale town where he had been deployed, before his SMG riffle with 30 rounds of ammunition was stolen by the assailants.

The police spokesman for Kigezi sub region, Mr Elly Maate, on Sunday morning paraded three suspects who confessed to killing the officer.

The suspects later led detectives to Nyabikoni village in Kabale town where the stolen gun had been hidden.

Mr Maate identified the suspects as 27-year-old Paul Dusingizimana alias Never give up, a resident of Murambi village Rwaramba parish in Kisoro District and 19-year-old Mugisha Asiimwe Mukwenda, a resident of Gatete village in Mukabaya parish Kisoro District. The other suspect is Bosco Twinomujuni, a boda-boda rider who allegedly facilitated the movement of the other two.

“After a tip-off by local residents, the police swung into action and arrested the suspects who later confessed to the murder of the special police constable. The suspects also led the police to a secret place where they had hidden the stolen gun before it was recovered. The suspects also led the police to another secret place where they had hidden some army jackets, trousers and shirts,” Mr Maate said.

He said Dusingizimana was recently released by Kabale High Court where he had been charged with another case of armed robbery. Court dismissed the case for want of prosecution.

Maate displays a gun that was reportedly recovered from the suspects.

However, Dusingizimana denied having ever involved himself in such acts.

While talking to the press at Kabale police station, Dusingizimana confessed to have killed the officer while Asiimwe said he was only accompanying him.

Twinomujuni said he did not know his passengers were criminals.

However, Mr Maate said detectives are still hunting for their accomplices.

“After completing the investigations the suspects shall be prosecuted in courts of law for murder and aggravated robbery,” Mr Maate said.

Baryabakabu was on January 28 found dead by his colleague, Mr Solomon Twinomujuni who had gone to take over duty from him at around 7am.
