Africa-Press – Uganda. The United Boda Boda Riders Cooperative Union, which unites all Boda Boda Riders SACCOs across Uganda, has officially launched its Luweero district office in a bid to strengthen services and empower riders in the area.
The launch event, held at the Luwero District Headquarters, marked a significant milestone as Ali Ssali was sworn in as the first Chairperson of the Union in the district, along with his executive team.
The Union, which has established offices in over 30 districts nationwide, plays a crucial role in supporting Boda Boda riders through various initiatives including fighting exploitative motorcycle loan schemes, facilitating access to vital documentation and safety gear such as helmets and reflectors, and lobbying for government funds to support SACCOs and alleviate poverty among riders.
Speaking at the event, Frank Mawejje, the National Chairperson of the Union, highlighted the exploitation faced by Boda Boda riders from motorcycle loan companies highlighting that many riders are forced to sell personal assets such as land to purchase motorcycles, only to lose them due to unsustainable loan terms.
“We are tired of seeing our people manipulated by high loan rates. Through this Union, we aim to offer more affordable options so that riders can buy a motorcycle and land, ensuring financial security for their families,” Mawejje said.
He also introduced a partnership with a company behind the “Bleep App,” a digital tool designed to report counterfeit products in the market and the app will help riders identify and avoid poor-quality spare parts like tires, oil, brake fluid and other materials that often lead to frequent repairs and accidents.
Mawejje further encouraged riders in Luweero to adopt a new ride-hailing app developed by the Union. Unlike existing platforms, the app operates nationwide and offers a low weekly subscription fee of Shs. 6,000. It is designed to increase rider incomes by connecting them with more customers beyond the traditional stage-based model.
The newly elected Luweero Chairperson, Ali Ssali, commended the Union for extending its services to the district and pledged to lead with integrity while prioritizing rider welfare.
“This Union will unify us as riders. I am particularly impressed with the digital app it will help us track wrongdoers and assure customers of safe, secure rides,” Ssali remarked.
Luweero’s Resident District Commissioner, Richard Bwabye Ntulume, who officiated the event as guest of honor, advised riders to remain focused on their livelihoods and not be swayed by political agendas.
“As we approach a heated political season, I urge you not to be used by politicians. Focus on your jobs they’ll promise you everything, but disappear after elections,” he cautioned.
Ntulume also encouraged riders to embrace government livelihood programs, particularly the Parish Development Model and Emyooga, which allocates 30% of its funds to youth and informal sector workers, including Boda Boda riders.
“Riding is not the only job in Uganda. Invest in other economic activities like farming to prepare for your future,” he urged.
The launch of the Luweero office signals a new chapter for Boda Boda riders in the region, promising stronger representation, improved access to services, and new economic opportunities through digital innovation.
