Africa-Press – Uganda. The leadership retreat of the Buganda Kingdom concluded with six key resolutions aimed at accelerating growth and improving standards across the kingdom.
The retreat was held under the theme “Raising standards in all aspects of Buganda.”
The Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga while closing this retreat highlighted the importance of high standards in service delivery and governance. He observed:
“The biggest setback to work in Africa is the poor standards in how work is carried out.”
He reflected on Uganda’s historical projects, noting that many works done between 1940 and 1970 were of high quality during the colonial era. He added:
“Since independence, Uganda has not built a hospital comparable to Mulago, and even Makerere University, built over 100 years ago, still has no equivalent.”
The Katikkiro urged leaders to avoid careless execution of projects, encouraging them to learn from well-constructed county headquarters (amasaza) in Buganda:
“Modern Buganda must avoid doing things haphazardly and instead emulate the county headquarters that were built with quality and continue to serve the kingdom.”
Six Key Principles for Development
To achieve sustainable growth, the Katikkiro emphasized six principles that should guide Buganda and Africa:Planning,Implementation,Monitoring

Correcting what does not work

Leaders at the retreat were introduced to several initiatives from different ministries:
Kabaka Education Fund – Presented by Emmanuel Kazibwe, who explained how individuals can apply for scholarships.
Kibuga Online – Demonstrated by Arthur Mawanda of K2 Telecom, showing how household items can be purchased online and paid for in installments.
Digital Wills – Guidance by Christopher Bwanika on writing and safely storing wills using digital platforms.
Cultural Practices – omutaka Namwama Augustine Kizito Mutumba discussed funeral rites and clan traditions.
Use of Data – Winfred Namubiru trained leaders on how to incorporate statistics and data in decision-making.
Digital Support for Leadership
To strengthen the “Raising Standards” initiative, the kingdom distributed tablets to leaders at all levels, helping them manage and execute responsibilities efficiently.
Conclusion
The retreat emphasized discipline, proper planning, and maintaining high standards as the foundation for Buganda’s sustainable development and leadership excellence.
