Africa-Press – Uganda. The return of the English Premier League has reignited excitement among football fans worldwide, and Uganda is no exception.
Alongside cheering for their favorite teams, many local fans are diving into subscription-based fantasy football leagues that offer competitive gameplay and cash prizes.
Unlike casual office or friend leagues, these fantasy leagues operate on a structured subscription model. Players pay a small entry fee to join, and in return, they compete for prizes awarded at multiple intervals: after each gameweek, monthly, and at the season finale.
This system has injected an extra layer of excitement into following matches, as every goal, assist, or clean sheet can impact a participant’s standing.
“For me, passion is something that makes a lot of sense when you can have fun with friends and colleagues while making some shillings out of it,” says Bernard Elwalu, aka Beewol, a social media activist.
“FPL money leagues give us a chance to put our football love and knowledge to use and make some money. When you put in the effort you find yourself scoring highly and that comes with financial rewards that could bail you out during some of those dry spells in the month.”
Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is an online game where participants create their own virtual football teams using real-life Premier League players.
Points are awarded based on the actual performance of these players in real matches—goals, assists, clean sheets, saves, and other stats contribute to a team’s weekly score.
Beewol also looks at the leagues for the consolation they can give an ardent fan whose team is struggling for form in the real league back in England.
“At a time when my team Man United is performing poorly, I find solace in my FPL team which could easily win me some shillings here and there,” he says.
Beewol says the appeal in the money leagues is that you invest once in August and potentially keep reaping till May next year when the season ends.
Launched in 2002 by the English Premier League, FPL lets fans create virtual teams of real players and earn points based on their performances.
Over two decades, it has grown into one of the world’s most popular fantasy sports, attracting more than 10 million players globally with features like captain picks, chips, and competitive leagues.
“Fantasy football in Uganda has evolved beyond casual play. These leagues now provide structure, stakes, and rewards that keep participants engaged all season long,” said Don Antonio, who runs the Ezzanyiro Fantasy League.
Some leagues like the EPL Pundits League run by John Bosco Kevin Mwesezi boast hundreds of participants, with top performers walking away with substantial cash prizes.
Last season, the Pundits attracted more than 200 managers and was one of the most competitive leagues in the country, with subscription of Shs75,000 per head.
But the deadline is tight for the league as at 8.30pm tonight, they will close all doors and windows to new entrants.
The Kampala Fantasy Moneygers, the first money league in the country, is steep. Subscription is Shs125,000 but unlike most of the other leagues that go big on overall prizes, the Moneygers league focuses on monthly.
“Like last season, we paid Shs300,000 for monthly winners, Shs200,000 for first runner-up and Shs100,000 for second runner-up,” says Jacobs Odongo, who runs the league.
Their deadline is more flexible, timed to coincide with the close of the transfer season on August 31 at midnight..
The subscription-based leagues rely on members, meaning the more the subscribers, the bigger the basket. This is how some leagues end up paying as many as six managers per month.
Organizers also emphasize fairness and transparency, using digital platforms to track points and update leaderboards in real time. Many leagues also offer mini-challenges and side contests to keep engagement high between gameweeks.
For Ugandan football fans, subscription-based fantasy leagues are more than just a hobby—they’re a way to test knowledge of players, teams, and tactics, while earning rewards for their savvy choices.
As the Premier League unfolds, these leagues are expected to attract even more participants eager to turn their football passion into tangible prizes.
With weekly matchups, monthly crownings, and season-long competitions, Uganda’s fantasy football scene is proving that local leagues can capture the thrill of global football while offering a uniquely competitive edge.
