Africa-Press – Uganda. The Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has emphasized the importance of nurturing strong leadership qualities in children from a young age, noting that early preparation is crucial for shaping a better future for Africa.
Mayiga made the remarks at the Buganda Kingdom headquarters in Bulange, Mengo, while hosting student leaders from primary and junior schools under the Uganda National Primary and Junior School Head Prefects Association.
The students presented a financial contribution of over Shs2 million to the Buganda Kingdom as a gesture of responsibility and civic engagement.
Speaking during the event, Mayiga urged parents and teachers to intentionally prepare children in leadership skills, stressing that Africa faces a serious leadership deficit.
“Many leaders lack integrity, accountability, and a spirit of service. We must begin preparing children early, instilling values like honesty, transparency, and sacrifice so that we can secure a better future,” he said.
He encouraged student leaders to understand their responsibilities, make sound decisions, and develop problem-solving skills to earn respect among their peers.
Mayiga also commended parents and educators for mentoring children, particularly in building confidence, communication skills, cultural awareness, and determination.
The Kingdom Minister of Local Government, Kabaka’s Tours and Diaspora Affairs, Joseph Kawuki, congratulated the student leaders on assuming leadership roles at a young age.
He urged them to use their experiences to contribute to a brighter future while remaining focused on academics.
The Association’s Vice Chairperson, Prince Victor Ssansa, expressed gratitude to the Buganda Kingdom for consistently engaging young people and educating them about their heritage and leadership principles.
Meanwhile, the Associations Chairperson, Dielah from Gayaza Junior School, praised the Kingdom’s guidance, extended best wishes on the Kabaka’s 71st birthday, and thanked God for his life.
The event was also attended by the Buganda Kingdom Minister for Social Services (Education, Health) and the Office of the Nnaabagereka, Chotilda Nakate Kikomeko; Kingdom Spokesperson, Israel Kazibwe Kitooke; teachers; and various student leaders, all highlighting the Kingdom’s focus on nurturing future generations through early leadership education.
