Africa-Press – Uganda. Supporters of Ismail Mohammed took to the streets celebrating his victory after he was declared the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer in Moroto’s closely contested mayoral primaries.

According to the official results, Mohammed secured the party ticket with 1,357 votes, narrowly beating his closest challenger Mark Siire, who garnered 1,067 votes. Other candidates Noah Ewaru and Risa Emmanuel Bole received 314 and 83 votes respectively.

However, the outcome has not been universally accepted. Mark Siire outrightly rejected the results, calling for the nullification of the election.

“These results do not reflect the will of the people. There were several irregularities, and we demand that the process be reviewed,” Siire said in a brief media statement.

Moroto District Registrar Yusuf Lomokol addressed the rising tensions, urging dissatisfied candidates to pursue the formal petition process.

“Candidates who are dissatisfied with the results are advised to file a formal petition within five days,” Lomokol stated.

He also clarified that the tallying process is ongoing, with votes for the LC5 Women Councilor seat being counted next, followed by the LC5 Councilors and the LC5 Chairperson seat.

The mayoral race saw participation from 13 villages spanning both the North and South Divisions of Moroto Municipality.

Despite the ongoing tallying and unresolved disputes, celebrations continued late into the night as Mohammed’s supporters danced and chanted slogans in the streets of Moroto Town.
