Muwanga Kivumbi Downplays NUP Defections Ahead of 2026

Africa-Press – Uganda. National Unity Platform (NUP) Buganda Deputy President Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi has dismissed claims that large numbers of NUP supporters are defecting to rival political parties, insisting the reports are exaggerated and misleading.

In an interview, Kivumbi argued that there is no evidence of a mass exodus from NUP, stressing that only individual politicians—mainly those who failed to secure party tickets—have crossed over.

“There is no village of NUP supporters shifting to another political party. What we are seeing are individual politicians moving because they failed to get a party ticket,” Kivumbi said.

His remarks come after parties such as the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the Democratic Forum (DF) announced that they had welcomed new members from NUP. The announcements coincide with heightened political activity ahead of the 2026 general elections, during which several parties have unveiled defectors as part of their growing ranks.

While rival parties have celebrated these moves as major political gains, NUP maintains that its grassroots base remains intact and committed to the struggle for change.

“People join other parties because of personal ambitions, not because NUP is collapsing. Our structures are strong and functional,” Kivumbi emphasized.

Political analysts note that defections are a common feature in Uganda’s electoral cycle, with aspirants often shifting allegiances in search of endorsement opportunities.

As the 2026 elections draw closer, the debate over political loyalty and party cohesion is expected to intensify, with all major parties working to consolidate their support bases.
