Africa-Press – Uganda. In her remarks, Ms Rebecca Kadaga, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East Africa Community Affairs said that the annual Nyege Nyege event in Uganda would never be stopped as long as she is alive.

Ms Kadaga who was the chief guest at the official opening of the 8th edition of the Nyege Nyege festival at the Source of the Nile in Jinja City on Thursday night noted that the event is the biggest in East and Central Africa.

According to Ms Kadaga, President Museveni asked her to assure Nyege Nyege’s revellers that security would be assured.

Despite some negative publicity, Mr Museveni said he knows people are having a good time because there are enough security measures to protect people and their property.

“The President sends you greetings, and he knows you’re dancing, eating, and enjoying yourselves, so he has sent senior army officers and police officers to ensure your safety”, she said.

In addition to being one of the largest festivals in East and Central Africa, she said the event will change the economic status of the people.

“I want to thank the organizers of Nyege Nyege for their resilience, focus, and commitment towards organising this event,” said Ms Kadaga.

The exhibitors were making final preparations by 10:00 pm to get ready for Friday. However, security was tight at all venues.

In addition to security operatives positioned outside the venues of the events in town centers, there are also Uganda Police marine patrols and UPDF marines patrolling the waters using boats on the shores of Lake Victoria and River Nile.

Additionally, a Uganda police helicopter was seen flying over both Lake Victoria and the Nile River Bank as well as Jinja city and Njeru across the Nile in Buikwe District.

Mr David Kimiti Ķasirimo a reveller from Kenya said he arrived on Wednesday evening with 30 different groups of people to experience Nyege Nyege.

“It’s my first time at Nyege Nyege. I like the culture exhibition and everything is very beautiful,” said Mr Kimiti.

It was noted by Mr Kimiti that Uganda has a peaceful atmosphere, a wide variety of traditional foods, and friendly, welcoming people.

According to Kenneth G from Denmark, this is his third time attending the event and there is always an increase in innovation in the development of cultural products which market Uganda to tourists.
