NRM CEC Vetting Enters Second Day Ahead of Delegates’ Conference

Africa-Press – Uganda. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has entered the second day of vetting candidates seeking positions on its Central Executive Committee (CEC), with more than 300 aspirants competing for 28 available slots.

The exercise, taking place at State House Entebbe, is being overseen by the party’s CEC. Secretary General Richard Todwong emphasized that clearance by the NRM Electoral Commission (EC) alone does not guarantee a position on the committee.

“EC nominations are like expressing interest. After that, you must be vetted,” Todwong told , noting that the process goes beyond forms to evaluate aspirants’ commitment, ideology, and track record in advancing party interests.

Todwong explained that the vetting examines candidates’ regional support, understanding of NRM ideology, philosophical depth, and historical knowledge of the party.

“You must appreciate the party in terms of ideological depth, philosophical knowledge, and its historical concept,” he said, stressing that the process ensures only capable leaders drive the NRM’s vision and contribution to Uganda’s development.

The vetting, which began on August 20, has already screened aspirants for positions in the youth, elders, and workers leagues.

Among those appearing was Brenda Kiconco, who welcomed the process.

“It’s good to have the vetting process. They will see that only those with interest to serve the party go through,” she said.

Concerns have been raised about the credibility of the NRM Electoral Commission, particularly regarding youth league elections, where the EC chairperson has been accused of a conflict of interest because his son is contesting.

Todwong, however, assured that candidates with clear conflicts would be asked to step aside to protect the integrity of the process.

Aspirants who successfully pass the CEC vetting will face further scrutiny from the National Executive Committee before their names are cleared for the delegates’ conference.

The conference, scheduled for August 27 and 28 at Kololo Independence Grounds, will bring together thousands of delegates to elect members of one of the NRM’s most influential organs.
