Africa-PressUganda. Uganda Cranes’ captain Denis Onyango and his club South African side Mamelodi Sundowns are setting the benchmark for excellence in the 2020-2021 Caf Champions League.

On Tuesday evening, Onyango thwarted all three scares to keep a clean sheet as Sundowns defeated TP Mazembe 1-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria to seal a historic double over the DR Congo outfit. The Brazilians took the lead after some neat inter-play before Lebohang Maboe stabbed home on 28 minutes.

Onyango, 35, was tested with two shots thereafter and as the hour mark approached, the Cranes’ custodian stood tall to collect substitute Lebeau Binemo’s close range shot after he had cut in from the right. The result means Sundowns became the first club to beat Mazembe home and away on the continent in the same season in 33 years. Sundowns had beaten Mazembe 2-1 away in Lubumbashi on March 6, also marking the latter’s first defeat at home in the competition in 53 matches spanning 12 years.

The loss in Pretoria means Mazembe have surrendered a double for the first time since losing to Angola’s Petro Atletico 1-0 at home and 2-1 in Luanda back in 1988. The 2016 winners Sundowns sealed top Group B spot with 12 points from four matches, this being Onyango’s second clean sheet here.
