Africa-Press – Uganda. A powerful rainstorm accompanied by hailstones and fierce winds has left dozens of families homeless and destroyed vast crop fields across at least ten villages in Kamira Town Council, Luweero District.
The two-hour storm on Friday evening tore through the area, blowing off rooftops, uprooting trees, and flattening gardens.
The worst-hit villages include Makonkonyigo, Tookekulu, Yandwe, Kanjuki, Mpeeeka, Kikandwa, and Katagwe, among others.
Abdul Latif Sserugo, chairperson of Makonkonyigo Village, said at least 20 households in his area were severely affected.
“The storm was so strong that it removed roofs from houses, leaving people stranded. Many are now seeking temporary shelter from neighbors,” he said.
Robert Kasozi, a resident of Tookekulu Village, said he returned home only to find his house completely destroyed.
“I was not around when it started raining. My wife called to inform me that the roof was gone. I don’t know where to take my family of five,” he said, visibly frustrated.
In Makonkonyigo, farmer Harriet Naigaga said she had lost her entire harvest, which she had financed through the Parish Development Model (PDM).
“I used PDM money to plant potatoes, maize, and beans on ten acres, but everything is destroyed. I don’t know how I’ll repay the loan or pay school fees,” she said tearfully.
Ibrahim Byekwaso, the Vice Chairperson of Kikandwa Village, said several domestic animals also perished in the storm.
He appealed to government and humanitarian organizations to support the affected households.
“People like us who believe in God feel this is an injustice. We are struggling to figure out how to survive after this disaster,” he said.
Local leaders have urged disaster response agencies and district authorities to conduct assessments and provide emergency relief, as many residents remain without food, shelter, or a clear recovery plan.
