Africa-Press – Uganda. In a significant stride toward harnessing its vast mineral wealth, the Uganda Chamber of Energy and Minerals (UCEM) today announced the launch of the second edition of its “30 Days of Mining Media Campaign.” The month-long initiative, set to run until September 25th, 2025, is strategically designed to build momentum for the highly anticipated 14th Annual Mineral Wealth Conference (MWC 2025), a pivotal event for the nation’s economic future.
Anchored on the theme, “Sustainable Mineral Development through Collaboration, Innovation and Green Transitions: Unlocking Potential for a Resilient Future,” the campaign seeks to engage and inform the Ugandan populace while simultaneously positioning the nation as a premier destination for mineral investment. Uganda’s rich endowment of resources, including gold, copper, and cobalt, holds the potential to transform the country into a regional powerhouse, a vision now gaining tangible traction.
The campaign’s urgency and importance are underscored by the sector’s recent growth. The mining sector’s contribution to GDP has grown from 0.3% in FY2009/10 to 2.2% in FY2022/23, with nearly 600,000 Ugandans currently employed in the industry. Notably, Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) accounts for over 90% of the output, generating an estimated USD 850 million annually. The campaign will spotlight these vital contributions, advocating for responsible practices aligned with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and championing the inclusion of youth, women, and artisanal miners in the sector’s growth.
Throughout the 30-day period, a series of targeted activities will be undertaken to amplify the message. These include comprehensive television, radio, and print features, extensive social media engagement, and high-level stakeholder roundtables. Expert dialogues will bring together government officials, investors, and academics to discuss the sector’s trajectory. Community outreach programs will further highlight innovation and opportunities for local value addition, fostering a sense of shared prosperity.
This proactive approach is firmly supported by government policies, most notably the Mining and Minerals Act (2022) and the National Development Plan IV (NDP IV). These frameworks prioritize the operationalization of a National Mining Company, the formal registration of artisanal miners, and expanded investment in geological mapping and infrastructure development in mining regions.
The campaign will culminate in the MWC 2025, Uganda’s premier platform for promoting investment in the energy and mining sectors. The conference will serve as a forum for leaders, private sector players, and international partners to deliberate on how Uganda can leverage its resources to drive mineral-led industrialization. With the support of esteemed sponsors, UCEM has issued a call to action for all stakeholders to actively participate in this transformative period. Together, they aim to build a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future for all Ugandans.
