Africa-Press – Zambia. President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA says dialogue is essential for communities to find ways of managing differences.
President HICHILEMA notes that every society is complex and made up of people with differing views, which naturally gives rise to disagreements.
He says he has personally witnessed how dialogue has helped prevent the country from descending into chaos during moments of national tension.
The President said this at State House today when he met members of the Oasis Forum to discuss the ongoing Constitution amendment process.
He explained that when his party believed it had been denied victory in the 2016 General Election, he discouraged members from protesting on the streets and instead chose to pursue the matter through the courts.
President HICHILEMA added that he does not support resolving disputes through street action, especially when opportunities for dialogue remain open.
He warned that taking grievances to the streets can expose the country to the kind of lawlessness seen before the 2021 General Election.
Oasis Forum Chairperson BEAUTY KATEBE said President HICHILEMA’s decision to invite the organisation reflects commendable leadership.
Ms. KATEBE outlined the Forum’s expectations, including the complete withdrawal of Bill 7 from the House.
She said the Oasis Forum also expects a fresh, inclusive and properly safeguarded process to be initiated, rather than one that is rushed.
