Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe distributed 122 million condoms last year as part of its drive towards an AIDS-free generation.

The figures were revealed during the National AIDS Council’s (NAC) fourth Annual General Meeting, held recently in Kadoma.

In his presentation, NAC Chief Executive Officer Bernard Madzima reported that a total of 122 million condoms were distributed across the country in 2024. He said:

“Our condom distribution programme distributed 120 317 736 male condoms and 2 255 601 female condoms nationwide, ensuring accessibility and protection across all communities.”

Madzima expressed optimism that Zimbabwe is on track to achieve an HIV-free status by 2030, after the country officially surpassed the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets.

The UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets are a set of ambitious global goals designed to end the AIDS epidemic. These targets ensure that the vast majority of people living with HIV (PLHIV) have access to testing and life-saving treatment.

Originally set as “90-90-90” for 2020, the targets were later raised to 95-95-95, with a deadline of 2025, and a broader objective of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

The UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets are meant to ensure that the vast majority of people living with HIV have access to testing and treatment.

The first target seeks to ensure that 95% of all people living with HIV are aware of their status.

The second target aims for 95% of those diagnosed to receive sustained antiretroviral therapy (ART).

The third target focuses on ensuring that 95% of people on ART achieve viral suppression.
