Government: Monday Is Not A Public Holiday

Africa-PressZimbabwe. The government has said tomorrow, that is, Monday, 3 May 2021 is not a public holiday but a normal working day.

There has been confusion regarding this year’s Labour Day which fell on a weekend, Saturday, 1 May 2021.

Some people speculated that since the public holiday fell on a weekend, the following Monday would automatically be a holiday. This isn’t true. A Monday can only be a holiday if the public holiday falls on a Sunday, not Saturday.

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage has cleared the air over the issue. It said in a statement:

A lot of enquiries have been made regarding whether tomorrow, 3 May 2021, is a public holiday. This follows the International Labour Day (Workers Day) commemoration which was held yesterday, Saturday 1 May 2021.

Kindly be advised that tomorrow will be a working day. Section 1(i) of the Public Holidays and Prohibition of Business Act [Chapter 10:21] provides that:

“When a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the Monday following shall be a public holiday.”
