Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Minnie Baloyi, wife of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, has commended musician Greatman (real name Tongai Gwaze) for his work providing wheelchairs to people living with disabilities who cannot afford them.

Greatman, an Afro-fusion artist living with a physical disability, launched the initiative “Vision 2040 Makumbo Kuvanhu” to support those in need.

Recently, Baloyi visited his home to personally hand over 20 wheelchairs and an additional US$2,000 to the charity.

Speaking in Shona, which isn’t her first language, Baloyi said the visit really opened her eyes to the struggles that people with physical disabilities go through. She said:

“We thank you for the briefing, because we would also like to know how you are living.

“When you just see someone on social media, you cannot really fully understand their situation.

“But by coming here, we can clearly see the kind of life one is living.

“We are grateful that you have allowed us to visit you and have accepted our donation.”

Baloyi also praised Greatman for starting the campaign, saying that as a celebrity, he’s using his voice to stand up for people who don’t usually get media attention. She said:

“You are their voice as you speak on their behalf… I hope you will continue with your charitable work… even though resources are limited, the little that you do will make a difference in the life of the recipient and it will also inspire others to help.”

Baloyi said that, out of the 20 wheelchairs she donated, she managed to get 14 herself and received the other 6 from an organisation she didn’t name.

Meanwhile, political commentator Jealousy Mbizvo Mawarire has praised her for the kind gesture. He wrote on X:

“Quite a moving gesture by Mrs Minnie Chiwenga. There are times when gifts become so invaluable because of the character of the giver.

“The speech, the setting and the connection with Greatman here speak of unity of purpose that comes out of a deeper well of love, a heart so huge yet so tender it draws to itself vulnerability for the sole purpose of turning it to an incorrigible desire to turn adversity into capacity, limitation into boundless ability and confinement into mobility.

“Thank you, Madam Colonel Chiwenga. May the God that moves you continue driving you towards helping the needy. May He give you more resources and ideas to change the lot of our people.”
