Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. NATIONAL Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) vice-president Walter Zimusi has said their board is pushing to send a dozen athletes to the World Marathon Championships set for Tallahassee, Florida, USA, in February next year.
The final selection of athletes was done at Bindura University of Science Education on Saturday.
A massive road run comprised four categories of men and women, including 12, under-16, under-18, under-20, as well as seniors.
In a post-tournament media briefing, Zimusi said he was impressed by the turnout.
“A very good turnout for athletes as compared to our previous national championships. We are talking about over 150 athletes who have entered our competition for this event,” he said.
Zimusi said they want to send a large contingent, if things go according to plan.
“We are talking about the junior women, probably our best three, the junior men, our best three, then our senior men and women, also our best three, that will give a number, about 12,” he said.
Zimusi is confident that if the marathon squad puts extra effort, they will raise the national flag.
“With practice and more effort into training, the times were very near to better times, to perfect times. Some were very good, and I think the coaches are working well with the athletes. We had a very good performance by the athletes,” he said.
