Tourism Industry rebound on the horizon: Government

PLAYERS in the tourism sector have been urged to be innovative and stimulate demand for tourism services, in the wake of COVID-19 induced challenges.

This is in light of the World Tourism Day national celebrations which were held in Mashonaland West Province this Monday, with Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) School of Hospitality and Tourism students among the key participants.

Addressing delegates, the Minister of Environment, Climate Change, Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Honourable Mangaliso Ndlovu made a clarion call for the sector to come up with more packages and incentives to help stimulate demand during this difficult period.

“Prospects for a rebound are in the horizon, more so given the decision by the government to allow intercity travel to resume, I, therefore, challenge the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority to coordinate industry marketing efforts and influence travelling patterns by regional and international travellers,” he said.

Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Mary Mliswa said the province looks up to the tourism industry to drive economic growth as the country implements the devolution agenda.

“The World Tourism Day celebrations come at a critical moment when we as a province are also looking up to tourism to drive our economic growth,” said Mliswa.

The annual celebrations were also marked by a symposium organized by CUT and the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Tourism and Hospitality Industry.

They were capped off by the handing over of the Korekore cultural village to the Makonde community in line with this year’s theme: ‘Tourism and Rural Development.’

The centre was funded by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority as part of the Ministry’s 100-day cycle projects.
