Africa-Press – Angola. Farmers in the municipality of Andulo, Bié province, expect to harvest four thousand tons of Arabica coffee in the current campaign.
In the 2022/2023 agricultural season, coffee growers in the region harvested 3,600 tons. The municipal director of Agriculture and Forestry, Paulo Chissonde, explained that 100,000 coffee seedlings were distributed to producers in the region.
Due to this and other bets made by the local government, the official said there are signs of a gradual recovery in coffee production in the region. For the official Paulo Chissonde, the four thousand tons of coffee to be harvested this year represent good indicators.
The lack of coffee peeling machines, as well as credit to finance coffee growers, has been revealed to be factors that contribute to the halt in production in most of the region’s plantation fields.
In Andulo, the main coffee growing areas are the towns of Lucucu, Canduvene, Epandi, Chicala-Galileia, Chicumbi, Taka and Etunda-Chivangue. The head of the Agriculture and Forestry sector, Paulo Chissonde, stressed that Andulo aims to stand out in the Central Region of Angola in the production of Arabica coffee, as it did in the pre-Independence period.
Favorable climate
Andulo municipal administrator Celeste Adolfo said the region has favorable land and climate to continue producing coffee.
For this reason, he urged local youth to continue investing in the production of coffee and other crops. It is worth noting that the municipality of Andulo controls a total of 9,849 coffee producers. The municipality of Andulo is located 130 kilometres north of the city of Cuito. It has an estimated population of 334,791 inhabitants, according to data from the 2014 census, with a population density of 39 inhabitants per square kilometre.
