Africa-Press – Angola. The Charge d’affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa to Angola (RSA), Christiaan Kriek, stated on Saturday (19), in Luanda, that the life and achievements of Nelson Mandela serve as a source of inspiration for the African continent.

In an interview during the anniversary celebration of the first black South African president, Christiaan Kriek reiterated that the relentless struggle for peace and harmony among the peoples that shaped Nelson Mandela’s trajectory continues to serve as a source of inspiration for Africa and the world.

The diplomat highlited that “Mandela Day” is a day of reflection, and urges young people around the world, and Africans in particular, to reflect on the social justice actions promoted by Madiba during the month of July.

“The day is an opportunity for society to recognize the individual power to change the world for the better. We can also play a role in raising awareness and expanding the reach of Mandela’s values, which include fighting injustice, helping people in need, and promoting reconciliation,” he said.

In his speech, Christiaan Kriek emphasized that “we are all encouraged to dedicate our time to making a difference in our communities on this Nelson Mandela Day. Through our actions, we can help make sustainable, long-term interventions in the fight against climate change and food insecurity.”

The event, held at the Beiral Nursing Home and themed “It is still in our hands to fight poverty and inequality,” was attended by individuals such as Lourenço Luís Domingos, administrator of of the District of Rangel and representative of the Luanda Provincial Government (GPL), Paula Xavier, Head of the Angola/South Africa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CACIAAS), and representatives of South African companies operating in the Angolan market.

Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated annually on July 18th in honor of his legacy. The day was officially declared by the United Nations in Nov 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day celebrated on July 18, 2010.
