Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of the Environment, Ana Paula de Carvalho Pereira, warned Tuesday, in Gaborone, that the African continent must play a leading role in nature preservation and sustainable development.
The minister expressed this during the official opening of the Ministerial Meeting of the First African Summit on Biodiversity, which takes place from November 2nd to 5th, under the theme “Valuing Africa’s biodiversity for prosperity”.
In her speech, she stressed that the meeting represents a historic milestone in affirming African leadership in environmental governance, reinforcing the commitment of member states to the protection, management, and sustainable enhancement of African biodiversity, considered a natural and strategic heritage of global importance.
The minister stated that the Maputo Convention constitutes an essential basis for ensuring that the continent’s natural resources are exploited responsibly and equitably, guaranteeing direct benefits to populations and promoting the preservation of ecosystems.
The strengthening of the implementation of this convention, according to the Minister of the Environment, is crucial to maintaining the balance of forests and ecosystems, ensuring that rivers and lakes continue to support local communities, and guaranteeing that fauna and flora remain sources of wealth and environmental stability for future generations.Minister Ana Paula de Carvalho is representing the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, at this First African Summit on Biodiversity, taking place at the Royal Aria Convention Centre in Gaborone.
The Angolan delegation also includes Ambassador Miguel César Domingos Bembe, Permanent Representative of Angola to the African Union, and the Angolan Ambassador to Botswana, Beatriz Morais.
The event brings together representatives of the African Union member states and development partners, with the aim of strengthening regional and international cooperation in the preservation and enhancement of African biodiversity, as a central element for the economic and environmental prosperity of the continent.
