Africa-Press – Angola. Preparations for the 7th Summit between the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU), taking place this November in Luanda, dominated Tuesday’s meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, and the head of the European Union Delegation accredited to Angola, Rosário Bento Pais.
During the meeting, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two entities assessed the level of organization of the summit, which will bring together the 27 member states of the European Union and the 55 countries that make up the African Union, in a context where Angola holds the rotating presidency of the AU.
The Luanda Summit also marks 25 years of partnership between the African Union and the European Union, initiated in 2000, during the first Africa-EU summit, held in Cairo, Egypt.
Since then, the two blocs have consolidated their relationship through periodic meetings held in Lisbon (2007), Tripoli (2010), Brussels (2014 and 2022) and Abidjan (2017).
The main objective of this month’s meeting is to strengthen cooperation in the areas of peace and security, economic integration, trade, multilateralism, sustainable development, digitalization, migration, mobility and human development – areas considered priorities for strengthening relations between Africa and Europe.
The European Union has played a significant role in cooperation with Angola, being one of the country’s main international partners. The EU-AU Joint Pathway, implemented since 2012, has deepened political and economic dialogue, fostering a stronger and more comprehensive partnership.
In recent years, this relationship has been strengthened with the signing of the Sustainable Investment Facilitation Agreement and the Memorandum of Understanding on the Lobito Corridor, initiatives that reinforce economic and infrastructural cooperation between the parties.
The European Union remains the largest donor to Angola, actively contributing to sustainable development and the well-being of the population, and reaffirms its commitment to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country.
