Vice-President Visits National Institute for Fight against AIDS

Africa-Press – Angola. The Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, is carrying out this Monday a fact-finding visit to the National Institute for the Fight against AIDS (INLS), as part of the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of National Independence and the 20th anniversary of the institution’s existence.

During her tour of the INLS, the Vice-President will watch an institutional video and visit an exhibition that portrays the timeline of progress achieved by the country in the fight against AIDS over the past 20 years.

The program also includes the sharing of information on the Institute’s organizational structure, the epidemiological situation of HIV in Angola, and the main projects underway.

According to official data, Angola is among the countries in Sub-Saharan Africa with one of the lowest HIV prevalence rates, estimated at 1.6% nationally.

Nevertheless, significant asymmetries persist between provinces, with a higher incidence in border areas, according to the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS 2023/24).

Over the past 35 years, the Government of Angola, with the support of bilateral and multilateral partners, has adopted international guidelines on HIV/AIDS, having designed and adjusted national strategies appropriate to the country’s context.

The interventions have been consolidated over time with the development and implementation of National Strategic Plans (NSPs), driven by a better allocation of public resources and the increasing involvement of national and international partners.

Angola reiterated its commitment to the global goal of eliminating the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030, by adhering to the targets set out in the Political Declaration adopted at the high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on AIDS.

The National Institute for the Fight against AIDS was created by Decree No. 07/05, of March 9, which establishes the rules for the organization and functioning of the institution, whose central objective is the coordination of the national response to the prevention and fight against HIV/AIDS in Angola.
