National Assembly Speaker Highlights Oversight Challenges 2026

Africa-Press – Angola. The Speaker of the National Assembly Adão de Almeida, pointed out on Wednesday in Luanda that oversight is one of the main challenges facing Parliament in the 4th Legislative Session for the year 2026.

The parliamentary leader made the statement during his speech at the end-of-year ceremony, where he highlighted the need to consolidate a clear and shared understanding of the concept and scope of oversight of the Executive Branch’s actions.

According to Adão de Almeida, although there is consensus on the importance of oversight, challenges remain in forming a uniform collective will on how it should be exercised within the constitutional and legal framework.

“The key is to build a collective and uniform reasoning around the oversight mission, so that it is exercised appropriately, in accordance with the Constitution and the law. This is a significant challenge that we must take on,” he said.

On that occasion, he called for the continued efforts and knowledge to allow the coexistence of different political forces and the strengthening of the democratic maturation process.

The National Assembly is composed of 220 deputies elected by universal, free, equal, direct, secret, and periodic suffrage, in accordance with the Constitution and the law, for a term of five years.

The legislative session begins with the first legislative session of the National Assembly after the elections and ends with the first session of the newly elected Assembly.
