Africa-Press – Angola. The Heads of State of Angola, João Lourenço, and of Congo, Denis Sassou N’Guesso, condemned Thursday, the seizure of power by force in the Republic of Gabon, having appealed for respect for the physical integrity of President Ali Bongo Odimba, his family and senior entities of State institutions.
President João Lourenço made a short working visit to Congo, at the invitation of his Congolese counterpart, to exchange views on the latest developments related to the unconstitutional change of government in the Gabonese Republic, which took place on the 30th of this month.
According to the final communiqué of the meeting, the two Heads of State exhorted all actors to prioritize political dialogue as a way of preserving the peace, unity and serenity of the Gabonese people.
According to the document, both called for the need to convene an extraordinary summit of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), with the aim of providing the organization with leadership in order to avoid the legal vacuum and guarantee the continuity of its activities, taking into account the events in Gabon.
They also underlined the excellent historical, friendship and cooperation relations existing between the Republics of Angola and Congo and decided to maintain regular consultations on issues of common interest, contributing to the preservation of peace in the sub-region.
Angola, Congo and Gabon belong to the subregion of Central African States. President João Lourenço was designated African Champion of Peace and Reconciliation by the African Union.
In the early hours of Wednesday, a group of military personnel from the Gabonese army announced a coup d’état, on national television, following the release of the results of the general elections in that country.
The announcement was made in a press release read on the television channel “Gabon 24” by the military who decided to close the country’s borders.
