Africa-Press – Angola. Angola and India discussed, on Wednesday, mechanisms for deepening parliamentary cooperation, with emphasis on the exchange of visits, the creation of parliamentary friendship groups, and training and capacity-building actions.

This occurred during an audience that the President of the National Assembly, Adão de Almeida, granted to the Indian Ambassador to Angola, Vidhu Nair.

Speaking to the press, moments after the meeting, the Indian diplomat said he had taken advantage of the meeting to congratulate the leader of the Angolan Parliament, on assuming a position of high institutional responsibility.

According to Vidhu Nair, the talks focused on concrete opportunities for cooperation between the parliaments of Angola and India, recalling the recent visit of the President of India to Angola, last November, as part of the celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of National Independence.

During the visit, he said, the President of India had the opportunity to address the Angolan Parliament, in a session that was attended by several deputies from the National Assembly, a fact that he considered revealing of the mutual interest in strengthening parliamentary relations.

The ambassador highlighted that Angola plays an important role in the African democratic context, while India asserts itself as the largest democracy in the world, a circumstance that, in his opinion, creates solid foundations for deeper cooperation between the two legislative institutions.

Vidhu Nair considered that direct contact between parliamentarians contributes to strengthening bilateral relations, as well as more effective collaboration at the international level and within multilateral organizations, taking into account the central role of parliaments in drafting laws and consolidating democracy.

Cooperation between Angola and India is strategic and multifaceted, covering areas such as health (pharmaceuticals, vaccines), energy (clean, renewable), agriculture, technology, defense and infrastructure, and reinforced by recent agreements that aim to diversify trade, take advantage of Indian experience and promote sustainable development.

The Asian country has emerged as a key trading partner for Angola, especially in crude oil, and with an active Indian community in Angola.
