Africa-Press – Angola. Angola and Serbia expressed interest in strengthening political and diplomatic relations and implementing cooperation in various fields.

The two countries reviewed the state of bilateral relations, reflected in 19 legal instruments, and expressed their intention to sign 12 more agreements and reactivate the Joint Commission at the ministerial level.

This information is contained in a note from the Angolan Embassy in Serbia sent, concerning a visit that the Secretary of State for International Cooperation and Angolan Communities, Domingos Custódio Vieira Lopes, made to that European country from the 20th to the 22nd of this month.

The two states have maintained diplomatic relations and technical-scientific and cultural cooperation since April 25, 1977.

In Belgrade, the Angolan delegation met with the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Damjan Jovic, and discussed the political situation in Europe and Africa, with a particular focus on the Balkans and Southern Africa.

Angola and Serbia discussed holding a Business Forum to promote the attraction of reciprocal capital and investments, as well as evaluating institutional relations in regional and international organizations, expressing mutual interest in boosting joint political and diplomatic actions within the framework of the New World Order.

During the working meeting, the Serbian delegation expressed satisfaction at seeing Angola participate in Expo 2027, to be held from May 15 to August 15 in Belgrade.

During the visit, Domingos Vieira Lopes and his delegation paid homage to the founder of the Nation and National Hero, António Agostinho Neto, laying a wreath at his statue in Belgrade, in addition to visiting the Museum of African Art, the President Josip Broz Tito Museum, and the Cathedral of Saint Sava, the largest Orthodox temple in Europe and one of the 10 largest churches in the world.

The delegation also held working meetings with staff from the Angolan Diplomatic Mission and the Angolan community residing in the country, addressing aspects related to the socio-political life of Angola and listening to the main problems affecting the diaspora in this European country.

Domingos Vieira Lopes explained that the Angolan Government is making efforts to provide diplomatic representations with the necessary resources to meet the needs of Angolan citizens living abroad, especially regarding the issuance of identity cards, passports, and other administrative and consular matters.

The diplomat took the opportunity to appeal to Angolans to contribute to the economic, social, and cultural development of the country, even while residing abroad.The friendly relations between Angola and Serbia date back to the early days of the armed struggle for national liberation, with the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia being the first European country to recognize Angola’s independence.

Serbia opened its Embassy in Luanda in 1976, and Angola established its Diplomatic Mission in this Balkan country in 1977.
