Africa-Press – Angola. The feature film titled “My Semba” (Meu Semba in Portuguese), by Angolan director Hugo Salvaterra, will be presented in the 13th Edition of the “Final Cut in Venice” event, which runs from the 31st of the current month to the 2nd of Sept in Venice, Italy.

According to a press release, the initiative, part of the Venice Biennale, aims to support films in post-production phase from historically underrepresented regions.

The Angolan film presents a poetic and socially engaged narrative, in which three young men, children of a frail father, face a harsh and precarious life in an African metropolis, finding in music, dance, and poetry a form of resistance and affirmation.

The press release adds that the work, produced by “Geração 80,” articulates semba, a traditional Angolan rhythm, as a metaphor for identity and collective memory.

According to the document, the inclusion of the film in “Final Cut in Venice” represents a strategic and symbolic step for Angolan audiovisual production.

“Angola’s presence in this space will help put the country on the map of global cinematic narratives, at a time when the African continent is beginning to receive more attention on international circuits,” it emphasizes.

The 13th Edition of the program welcomes 7 more works from diverse geographic and sociopolitical contexts, spanning genres such as fiction and documentary.

The event is recognized for providing direct access to distributors, festival programmers, and industry decision-makers, in addition to offering technical prizes and professional services essential for the completion of selected projects.
