Africa-Press – Angola. The Government of Angola condemned, this Thursday, the coup d’état in Niger, which took place on Wednesday (26), and demanded the immediate release of President Mohamed Bazoum, family members and collaborators.
The position of the Angolan Government is expressed in a statement released, in Luanda, in which it considers the situation “a serious attack on the country’s constitutional order”, and “an unacceptable violation of democratic principles”.
Angola underlines the fact that the coup d’état perpetrated by a group of soldiers violates the principles “on which the legitimacy of the power instituted in 2021 is based, through free and democratic elections”.
In the light of these facts, continues the declaration, the Angolan Government and the President of the Republic, as Champion of Peace and National Reconciliation in Africa, express the conviction that a climate of understanding will be achieved.
He declares that he hopes for a climate of understanding “that urgently favors” and “allows the restoration of democratic legitimacy in the country”.
The Angolan Government “unequivocally” expresses support for the position taken by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in vehemently condemning the coup d’état.
In the document, Angola urges ECOWAS to take the necessary steps to “quickly” resume the functioning of legitimate State institutions in the Republic of Niger.
Last Wednesday, a group of soldiers carried out a coup d’état against the legitimate Nigerian government.
