Africa-Press – Angola. The National Team finished last in swimming at the African Youth Games on Tuesday, in Luanda, among nine participants, with only two bronze medals.
The two Angolan medals were obtained in the 4x200m freestyle and 4x100m freestyle relay events, both by the men’s quartet, consisting of Carlos Fernandes, Oliksander Zhurkov, Mário Baptista and Santiago Guimarães.
This is the second time the country obtains two bronze medals at the African Youth Games, after the 2018 edition, held in Algeria.
At the close of the swimming events, the national team finished 5th in the 4x100m medley relay, with a time of 4:29.47.
The gold in this relay competition went to South Africa, with 3:56.94. Algeria won the silver medal with a time of 3:57.47, while Zimbabwe secured the bronze with a time of 4:25.66.
In the women’s relay, the country finished 7th with a time of 5:39.06, while the podium was led by South Africa, which took the gold with a time of 4:19.75.
The Algerian team took the silver medal with a time of 4:38.00, while Tunisia retained the bronze with 4:38.94.
In the women’s 800m freestyle, Angolan Rhanya Santo finished in 5th position with a time of 9:47.11, leaving the podium to the South African champion Leach Markgraaff, with 9:16.79.
Kylie De Bruyn, also from South Africa, won the silver medal with a time of 9:32.92, while Tunisian Kenza Ayari took the bronze with a time of 9:36.80.
In the final open water classification, South Africa emerged victorious with 61 medals, including 33 gold, 20 silver, and eight bronze.
Algeria secured second place with 21 medals, including four gold, nine silver, and eight bronze.
Tunisia finished third with three gold, five silver, and eight bronze medals.
The open water swimming events will take place on Wednesday at one of the resorts on Luanda Island, starting at 9 am.
