Africa-Press – Angola. Angola failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2025 Cosafa women football championship, ending the group stage on Tuesday after losing 1-0 to Malawi in the third round of the tournament being held in South Africa.
Malawi’s striker, Irene Khumalo, considered the best player on the field, scored the only goal of the match that took place at the Seshego Stadium in the city of Polokwane.
In another match of the day, Zimbabwe beat Botswana 1-0, closing out Group B and advancing in the competition with seven points in second place, the same as Zambia placing first. In the last round, Zambia beat Eswatini 2-1, having scored one more goal than Zimbabwe.
In the other Group A match, South Africa and Lesotho drew 1-1, a result that confirmed South Africa’s qualification in first place with seven points.
However, Malawi has 6 points, Angola has 3, and Lesotho has 1, and is therefore out of the competition.
In three games, Angola won against Lesotho (3-1) in their debut, and suffered consecutive defeats against South Africa (0-2) and Malawi (0-1), scoring three goals and conceding the same number.
Therefore, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa are qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament, which runs until March 1st.
To complete the third round, Mozambique and Madagascar will face each other on Wednesday, while Namibia will have a day off in this group (C) consisting of three teams.
Madagascar and Namibia have three points each, while Mozambique has yet to score.
It is worth noting that Zambia is the current title holder.
