Africa-Press – Angola. The minister of Energy and Waters, João Baptista Borges, is representing Angola at the African Union Water Investment Summit (AIP-AU), that opened Wednesday in Cape Town, South Africa, under the leadership of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The event, which takes place under the motto “Solidarity, equality and sustainability”, aims to identify sources of financing to fill the estimated annual deficit of 30 billion dollars for the water sector in Africa, according to a press release on Thursday.
The meeting’s objectives also include mobilizing political will and financial resources by showcasing sustainable and climate-resilient water and sanitation projects from across the continent.
Furthermore, the event also allows African Union member states to align on water investment priorities and strengthen their cooperation.
The Summit, running until Friday, brings together several African heads of state, G20 representatives, global investors, development partners, United Nations organizations, high-level policy plenary meetings, sessions on investment and innovation, project presentations and investment partnerships, among others.
The event is considered a crucial platform to drive concrete actions and attracting investments to ensure safe drinking water and sanitation services on the African continent and its people.
However, while water and sanitation are fundamental to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting public health, food security, industrial growth and climate adaptation, shortage of financing and limited technical capacity remain major challenges for the continent.
