Africa-Press – Angola. Angola welcomed Monday in Geneva, Switzerland, the fact that Mozambique continues to support a rules-based multilateral trading system, based on the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The gratification was expressed by the ambassador, Margarida Izata, Permanent Representative of Angola to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland during the session of the Trade Policy Review (RPC) body, dedicated to the fourth review of Mozambique’s trade policy, which is taking place at the headquarters of the World Trade Organization (WTO), in Geneva, from Monday to Wednesday.

On the occasion, the diplomat also said that Angola agrees with Mozambique in supporting the WTO’s decision-making principles by consensus and in expanding the space for developing and least developed countries.

He also acknowledged that despite being active members of the African Union, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the new African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCTFA), the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) and members of the WTO since 1995 and 1996, respectively, Mozambique and Angola are, unfortunately, very modest trading partners.

“Although Mozambique’s exports to the rest of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) are an essential source of economic diversification, more than two-thirds were still destined for South Africa, which also continues to be the main supplier of goods to Mozambique, followed by the European Union, China and Singapore”, highlighted the diplomat.

According to the official, the consolidated statistics available from UN-COMTRADE, during 2022, indicate that Angola exported to Mozambique only 2.5 million dollars and imported goods from Mozambique worth 7.93 million, the note said.
