Africa-Press – Angola. The general commander of the Angolan National Police stated, at UN headquarters in New York, that armed conflicts and violence in the world are threats to sustainability and peace, putting at risk the progress achieved so far at a global level.

According to a statement sent yesterday by the Permanent Mission to the UN, in New York, Commissioner General Arnaldo Carlos highlighted that the Police continue to be a fundamental instrument to promote and guarantee the maintenance of peace and security global.

During the intervention of the commander-general at the 4th United Nations Police Chiefs’ Summit, last Friday, it was highlighted that the body actively acts in conflict, post-conflict and other crisis situations, providing support to States. members in protecting the civilian population and maintaining public order and security.

Commissioner-General Arnaldo Carlos said that Angola recognizes the important role of police forces in operations to strengthen international peace and security.

In this context, according to Arnaldo Carlos, in 2022, the country carried out the first deployment of National Police personnel, including the female component, in the UN Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

The General Commander of the National Police stressed that, under the leadership of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, as Champion of the African Union for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa, and acting leader of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), Angola has played an important role in the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts on the continent, including through diplomatic actions to increase intervention and contribution to peacekeeping missions.

To this end, Arnaldo Carlos highlighted monitoring and preventive intervention as the main operational tools, with a view to avoiding or containing conflicts in the initial phase, particularly in the regions of Central and Southern Africa, where the country’s cooperation activity is most visible.

During his speech, the Commissioner-General also reported that Angola is committed to combating common and transnational crime, as well as preventing violence caused by armed conflicts.

According to the commander-general, the country’s commitment is to continue contributing with National Police personnel in peace and security missions, as well as in the search for solutions that aim to guarantee “the prevention of conflicts and violence and the consolidation of peace”.

Meetings on the sidelines of the dome

On the sidelines of his participation in the 4th United Nations Summit of Chiefs of Police, the Commander-General of the National Police held several meetings with his counterparts and other entities linked to the Security and Public Order sector.

Shortly after arriving in New York, Arnaldo Carlos traveled to New Jersey where he paid a courtesy visit to the sheriff of Essex County, Armando Fontoura.

The meeting served to exchange views in the field of Public Security and to envisage cooperation in this sector, as well as in the training of National Police personnel.

Arnaldo Carlos also held a meeting with the second general commander of the Turkish Police, with whom he discussed cooperation in Public Security matters and in the fight against various forms of organized crime.

At another time, the general commander of the National Police met with the vice-minister of Public Security of China to also discuss issues related to Police Cooperation.
