Angola Reaffirms Commitment to Food Security in Africa

Africa-Press – Angola. The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, met on Wednesday with the Italian Ambassador to Angola, Marco Ricci, and the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Zahari Virani, with whom she discussed preparations for the 2nd United Nations Food Systems Summit +4 Stocktake (UNFSS+4) to take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

During the meeting, the parties reviewed the summit organizational process, co-hosted by Ethiopia and Italy, which aims to assess the progress made since the first summit in 2021, within the framework of the transformation of global food systems.

The talks focused on the importance of cooperation between the UN, the AU, and member states, with an emphasis on Angola’s role as Pro-tempore Chair of the continental organization, in strengthening regional strategies to ensure food security in Africa.

Esmeralda Mendonça reiterated the country’s commitment to the summit’s goals and assured the presence of a high-level Angolan delegation at the event.

The meeting also discussed the need to mobilize investments for structural projects, in particular the ones on Lobito Corridor, was also discussed as a means of boosting agricultural development and economic diversification in the country and the region.

UNFSS+4 is a high-level international platform, convened by the United Nations Secretary-General, to promote the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 2 (zero hunger).

The event will bring together Heads of State and Government, representatives of international organizations, civil society, the private sector, academia, and youth, with the aim of fostering political commitments and concrete actions to transform current models of food production, distribution, and consumption.

The summit will also serve to present national solutions, strengthen thematic coalitions, boost international funding, and propose sustainable and inclusive alternatives based on science, traditional knowledge, and local realities.
