Africa-Press – Angola. Angola had, until the 6th of this month, 105,887 positive cases of Covid-19 and 1,936 deaths, said this Wednesday in Madrid (Spain), the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.
The first positive case of Covid-19 in Angola was registered in March 2020, in a patient from Lisbon (Portugal).
According to the Angolan Head of State, who was speaking after being distinguished for his efforts in combating Covid-19, with a book entitled “The Art of saving life”, to respond to the pandemic, the country increased the number of hospital beds, units intensive care units, clinical laboratories, imaging equipment and hemodialysis units.
Within the framework of the same strategy, epidemiological/laboratory surveillance was reinforced, free testing capacity, the hiring of new health professionals, as well as the improvement of biosecurity conditions.
The Statesman underlined the fact that in the case of Angola there was no collapse of the health system during the four major epidemic waves of Covid-19.
According to João Lourenço, during the last wave that occurred in January 2022, caused by the Omicron variant, Angola recorded the lowest lethality in the fight against Covid-19, with the support of the Covax initiative.
In his speech, the Head of State informed that Angola started in March 2021 the implementation of the National Vaccination Plan against Covid-19, mobilizing millions of vaccines with free doses.
To control the spread of the virus and avoid the collapse of the National Public Health System, the Angolan Executive made a strong investment in the construction of hospitals and diagnostic centers, and in the acquisition of vaccines.
As part of the vaccination campaign, the Angolan authorities mobilized 35.5 million doses of safe vaccines for an eligible population of around 18 million inhabitants, aged 12 and over.
Still according to official figures, since the beginning of the vaccination process against Covid-19, 18 million, 932 thousand and 660 people have been immunized, of which 15 million, 884 thousand with only one dose, 8 million 927 with the dose complete, 2 million, 190 thousand and 106 with the booster doses and 6 million 087 citizens without the booster dose.
Despite the resources made available by the Executive to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, Angola benefited from international donors, including countries and organizations.
Government data indicate that, by 2022, the country had more than 33,000 hospital beds, as a result of the State’s investment in improving health services.
