Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan Constância Gaspar was appointed on Tuesday as the African Union (AU) ambassador to Washington, D.C., after receiving the “agrément” from the current US administration.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX), the Chairman of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, appointed Constância Gaspar as the permanent representative and head of the AU Mission to the United States of America, in Washington, D.C., effective October 1, 2025.
Constância Gaspar’s appointment received a positive response from Angolan diplomats, as it represents a significant achievement in placing Angolan officials in prominent positions within international organizations.Angolan Foreign Minister Téte António stated in New York that he received the information with great pride and satisfaction, as it represents a significant milestone not only for Angola, but for the entire Portuguese-speaking world and for African representation on the global stage.
For the Angolan Foreign Minister, who is in New York City to participate in the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, this appointment reinforces the role of African women as agents of transformation and leadership on a global scale.
Constância Gaspar is a highly qualified jurist with over 15 years of experience in Public International Law, treaty negotiation, and legal advice in the AU and UN systems.
She is widely recognized for her legal acumen, diplomatic expertise, and strong commitment to justice, peace, and the rule of law in Africa.
Prior to her appointment as AU Ambassador to the United States, she was the Officer-in-Charge of the AU Permanent Observer Mission to the UN in New York, where she served as Senior Legal Officer.Constância Gaspar led high-level legal engagements on crime prevention, counter-terrorism, international governance, and Africa’s legal representation at the UN, particularly in the 6th Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.
She also significantly strengthened the legal coordination of the African Group, ensuring a unified position on critical global legal issues.
