Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan President João Lourenço met on Thursday in Brussels with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, during which they discussed issues of common interest within the framework of the strategic partnership between Angola and the European Union.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the second edition of the Global Gateway Forum, an event where the Angolan Head of State spoke on behalf of the Government of Angola and the African Union, the organization he currently chairs.

During the meeting, the parties reviewed the progress of European Union projects in Angola, with emphasis on the Lobito Corridor (Benguela), considered a structuring initiative for strengthening regional connectivity and the economic development of the African continent.

Issues related to the construction and modernization of infrastructure in Africa were also discussed, as part of the Global Gateway program, an initiative that aims to boost sustainable investments and strengthen strategic partnerships between Europe and the African continent.

The Global Gateway Forum, promoted by the European Union (EU), aims to strengthen international cooperation through investments in energy, transport, digital connectivity, health, education, and scientific research, seeking to promote sustainable and resilient global connectivity in a context marked by geopolitical and geoeconomic challenges.

The initiative aims to mobilize up to €300 billion in sustainable investments by 2027, consolidating Europe’s commitment to inclusive development and international cooperation.

Under the motto “Strategic Partnerships in a Geopolitical Era,” the meeting seeks to affirm the European Union’s role as a global player in promoting clean, safe, and smart infrastructure, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement.

The Global Gateway program represents a multilateral alternative to unilateral investment approaches, reinforcing the European Union’s role as a trusted partner for sustainable and inclusive growth, with a special focus on the African continent.
