Africa-Press – Angola. The Transport minister Ricardo de Abreu announced on Tuesday in the country’s capital, Luanda, that the construction of the Luanda mass rapid transit system is scheduled for the end of this year.
According to the minister, the first phase will have a line extension of 60 kilometers, with the first 15 km expected to be operational by 2027.
Ricardo de Abreu, who was speaking to the press on the sidelines of the 3rd International Cycle of Technical Railway Conferences Angola-RAIL 2025, said the line is budgeted at 3 billion US dollars, in addition to the infrastructure component, specifically technological and energy issues.
The minister said the project is part of the light rail and urban railways program to improve urban mobility in the country’s capital, underlining that technical and financial work is underway for the construction to kick off by the end of this year.
“These investments are not mere engineering projects, but rather instruments of structural transformation, designed to last, generate jobs, attract investment, and integrate Angola into regional and African logistics corridors,” the minister said.
The Luanda mass rapid rail system (MSL) has an initial route of 60 kilometers, out of the planned 149 km.
