Bar Association in Huambo Focuses on Six New Municipalities

Africa-Press – Angola. The council of the Angolan Bar Association (OAA) in the province of Huambo has defined, for the year 2026, the expansion of legal services to the six new municipalities of that region of the Central Plateau.

These are the municipalities of Alto-Hama, Bimbe, Chilata, Cuima, Galanga and Sambo, elevated to this category on Jan 1, 2025, within the framework of the country’s new Political-Administrative Division, based on Law No. 14/24, of Sept 5.

This fact was made public on Tuesday (6) by the Chair of the local Barr Association Council, Domingos Sassi, who stated that the focus is on the guidance, representation and defense of the legal interests of citizens, as well as acting in the prevention of legal problems, with consultations and legal advice.

In sum, he said that a letter has already been sent to the National Police Command in the municipality of Cuima, to create conditions that will allow lawyers to accompany, together with the Criminal Investigation Service, the interrogations of citizens in conflict with the law.

He added that the same document will be sent to the other municipalities, in addition to holding lectures and public consultations, to raise the legal awareness of the local population.

Domingos Sassi said that this is a recurring practice in the previous 11 municipalities of the province, with the sending of the on-call list of lawyers from the courts of the Bailundo, Caála and Huambo districts.

In a review of 2025, he said that 804 needy citizens benefited from legal assistance, an increase of 17% compared to the previous, with 42 cases of a civil nature, 72 labor, 170 criminal and 520 family.

In the same year, he said, 74 lawyers received definitive licenses and 53 were granted traineeships.

He stated that the province of Huambo has a deficit of approximately 30,000 lawyers to serve its 2,691,902 inhabitants, according to the guidelines of the United Nations Population Fund.

The local Association Bar Council currently oversees 560 lawyers and 410 trainees, with coordinators in the municipalities of Bailundo (Londuimbali and Mungo), Caála (Ecunha, Longonjo, Chinjenje and Ucuma) and Huambo (Cachiungo and Chicala-Cholohanga).
