Basketball: Petro and Benfica meet in the semi-finals

Africa-Press – Angola. The Petro de Luanda and Sport Lubango and Benfica teams qualified Tuesday, for the semi-finals of the 31st Under-14 Men’s National Basketball Championship and face each other, on the way to winning the trophy.

To reach the semi-finals, Petro defeated Obra Social da Maxinde by 102-33, while Benfica barely beat Desportivo Cidade do Kilamba by just one point difference (54-53).

The tricolors intend to revalidate the title, while Sport Lubango and Benfica aim to reach the trophy.

Benfica’s assistant coach, Anita Domingos, highlighted the dedication of the athletes, emphasizing that luck was on their side, because despite winning, the boys were not determined and entered the field without training, once they learned about the game, just two hours before.

“We were aware that we would play the quarterfinals tomorrow, when in fact the game was scheduled for today and we entered the field without even warming up, but luckily we won”, he stressed, adding that he had a difficult task in the semifinals against Petro de Luanda.

In turn, Kilamba’s assistant coach, Afro Geneses, congratulated the opposing team and recognized some weakness in his athletes, hence the defeat.

In other quarter-final matches, Ferroviário de Angola beat Desportivo do Sequele by 60-20, while Clube Vila Clotilde beat BP Cunha by 64-43.

Started on the 21st of this month, the Championship will run until the 29th and has the participation of Petro, Benfica, Kilamba, Ferroviário, Sequele, Vila Clotilde (Luanda), BP Cunha and Maxinde (Malanje), in male.

As for women, the teams from 1o de Agosto, Palanca, Estrelinha, Escorpiões (Luanda), Casa do Pessoa do Porto de Lobito (Benguela) and Académica de Malanje compete.
