Africa-Press – Angola. The municipal administrator of Cambambe (Cuanza Norte), Adão Malungo, defended in Dondo, the relaunch of tourism to boost the economy in the district.
To achieve this goal, he highlighted the need to rehabilitate the access roads to the region’s tourist areas, with emphasis on the commune of Massangano, a location with great historical and cultural potential.
The commune, located in the strait between the Kwanza and Lucala rivers, hosted, during the occupation of Luanda by the Dutch, the provisional capital of Angola.
It has a vast historical-cultural collection, consisting of the tomb of the Portuguese captain Paulo Dias de Novais, the ruins of the court, the town hall and the prison house.
Part of this collection is the former fortress of the Portuguese army, the cemetery where the remains of 19 Capuchin friars who died from illness during the reign of Ngola Kiluanje lie.
There is also the cruise, the slave square, the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Vitória, built in the 16th century, and a lush landscape next to the Kwanza River, reminiscent of the Portuguese river route during the slave trade.
Speaking about the municipality’s economic development indicators, Adão Malungo said that, with the current state of abandonment of those infrastructures, the government is losing a lot of money.
He mentioned that access difficulties discourage tourists and researchers from visiting the region.
The few who visit the location, he added, do so without any compensation for the State’s coffers.
In addition to Massangano, the access to the tourist areas in the municipality of São Pedro da Quilemba also need rehabilitation, which are in an advanced state of degradation.
He also pointed out the reactivation of the local industrial park as essential to the region’s economic growth.
Until the 1980s, the municipality was considered the 4th industrial park in the country, after Luanda, Benguela and Huambo.
The industrial fabric of the municipality comprised a set of manufacturing units such as the Sociedade Algodoeira do Ambriz, the construction materials factory (Pre-blocks) and the banana processing factory, for export.
It also included the wine, liqueur and fruit processing factory in syrup (Vinelo), the brewing company Eka, all of which were paralyzed, except for the Cambambe dam, which is working at one hundred percent of its capacity.
The official also pointed out the agriculture sector, which is also awaiting investment, and whose reactivation would contribute to revenue collection.
He highlighted that the municipality has arable land and water in abundance, but that they are exploited with limitations, due to weak investment in mechanization and irrigation means.
With an area of 5,212 square kilometers and around 88 thousand inhabitants, the municipality of Cambambe is made up of the municipalities of Massangano, Dange-ya-Menha, São Pedro da Quilemba and Zenza-do-Itombe.
