Africa-Press – Angola. The chess player, David Osvaldo, from the Huila Railway Club, won Saturday, in this city, the first edition of the “Hamilton Lopes Memorial” tournament, having accumulated five wins and two draws.
In second and third place were athletes Narciso Francisco, from the René Castilho do Cunene club, and José Miguel, from Misto da Huíla, with five and 4.5 points, respectively, in a tournament promoted by the Provincial Chess Association of Huíla.
With a duration of seven hours, the event was attended by 12 athletes, from the clubs Misto da Huíla, Sport Lubango and Benfica, Gloriosos FC, René Castilho do Cunene, from the Brazone and Barazoqui nuclei, and from Escola Mestre JF.
The competition had the participation of a Fide Mestre (MG), João Francisco, from Luanda, who came in eighth place.
When summing up the competition, the president of the Provincial Chess Association in Huíla, Vicente Silva, said he had run smoothly, despite the fact that they expected more players from other provinces in the country.
He declared that with the tournament, the idea is to create more competitions in Huíla and the competitive strength of local players, as well as promote interaction with athletes from other provinces and attract foreign players.
The trend, according to the director, is to include the “Hamilton Lopes Memorial” in the obligatory tournaments on the APX calendar and in the Festivities of Nossa Senhora do Monte.
He made it known that Hamilton Lopes was the “first organizer” of chess in Huíla, in the early 1980s. He organized and sponsored several tournaments and provincial and national championships, even offering one of his facilities, located next to the former Tirol restaurant as headquarters of Chess in the province of Huíla.
