Africa-Press – Angola. Three writers from Huíla were honored in the city of Lubango by the national project AS Literatura, in recognition of their contributions to the development of children’s literature in the country.
Maria João Chipalavela, Gisela Borges, and Basílio Tchindombe were honored as part of the 50th anniversary of National Independence.
Writer Maria João Chipalavela, with a career spanning over 40 years, was honored for her “vast production” dedicated to younger audiences, notably titles such as “A Gotinha Arbolinha,” “A Escola e a Dona Lata,” and “Contos de Maria João.”
Gisela Borges was recognized for her work “O Meu Livro de Histórias,” published in 2014, which brings together seven short stories designed for each day of the week.
The author stated that her writing seeks to encourage a love of reading from childhood. “When I write, I think about the impact of words on children, their power to learn, dream, and imagine,” he said.Basílio Tchindombe, also honored with several published children’s books, including “Nature’s Day,” “The Vissolela and the Gimo,” and “The Centipede and the Ant” (currently being published), considered the tribute an act of validation of his career.
“All recognition is the attentive gaze of another upon you,” he emphasized.
In turn, the coordinator of the “Reading at Home” project, Isaías de Lemos, who has honored 27 Angolan writers since December 2024, stated that the project aims to achieve 50 awards this year, promoting public recognition of authors and bringing books closer to communities.
AS Literatura reaffirmed its commitment to continuing to promote reading and valuing national authors, especially those who dedicate their writing to children and young people.
The activity was preceded by moments of staged reading by children, who presented excerpts from the works of the honored writers.
