Africa-Press – Angola. A comic book exhibition by Angolan artist Paulo Airosa opened on Saturday (11) in Lisbon, Portugal, as part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of National Independence.

Featuring more than 70 original drawings depicting the daily life, strength, and soul of the Angolan people, the exhibition will be open to the public until Nov 11th.

The exhibition aims to mark the Angola 50th anniversary through an artistic approach that pays tribute to Angolan culture, memory, and identity.

Artist Paulo Airosa explained that the initiative is part of the “Banda Desenhada da Banda” project, whose mission is to promote and internationalize Angolan comics.

He said the exhibition’s goals is to bring Angolan art to all countries where Angola has diplomatic representation, with Portugal being the kick off point for this cultural journey that got the support of the Angolan Embassy.

Paulo Airosa also noted that, due to financial constraints, it was not possible to include other artists in this first Edition, but he looks forward to bringing together more creators in the future and strengthening the presence of Angola’s ninth art abroad.

“The public can expect a creative mosaic of fictional scenes that address our daily lives and value our national identity,” he emphasized.

Also, within the context of the 50th anniversary of Independence, the artist called for the need to reflect on the “price paid for freedom,” the difficulties of the post-independence period, and the achievements through peace and national unity, as only with peace and stability can we build a promising future for Angola.

Born in the province of Bié, Paulo Airosa stood out from an early age for his talent and dedication to art.

At the age of 15, he joined the Union of Visual Artists of Angola and, at 19, won his first national award.

In 2006, he won the competition to create the official mascot of the Angolan National Football Team for the World Cup in Germany, a milestone that propelled his career and led to the founding of the company Airosa Design and Visual Communication.

He is a co-founder of the Luanda International Cartoon Festival and has been a leading voice in promoting Angolan art internationally.

Having lived in Portugal for three years, he continues to represent Angola at prestigious cultural events and develop projects that gathers art, education, and identity.
