The Group of ambassadors of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) accredited to Senegal held, Thursday, with the Senegalese local authorities and the academic community, various actions to boost political, economic, cultural, social and social relations friendship.
The actions focused on promoting the Portuguese language in Senegal, where figures indicate more than 47,000 students are learning Portuguese.
The diplomatic engagement, which was attended by the Executive Secretary of the CPLP, Zacarias da Costa, and the permanent representative of Angola in the said organisation, Ambassador Francisco Oliveira Encoge, reserved, among other meetings, an audience with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Senegal, Aissata Tall Sall.
At the meeting, the Senegalese official praised the growth of relations with Portuguese-speaking countries, according to a note from the Angolan Embassy in Senegal, Saturday.
The document adds that minister Aissata Tall Sall highlighted, at the meeting, her country’s historical relationship with Brazil, Portugal, as well as the strong dynamics of cooperation and friendship that Senegal maintains with Angola, in different areas, including, in the sector of petroleum and its derivatives.
The Senegalese minister, who also referred to the importance of Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau, referred that Angola, along with other countries, is a model to be followed, especially due to its experience in oil exploration.
In turn, the Executive Secretary of the CPLP, Zacarias da Costa, summarized the meeting as having been fruitful, especially looking at the importance of deepening relations between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Community of Language Countries Portuguese (CPLP).
“We talk a lot about initiatives within the scope of ECOWAS and the CPLP, especially about how we can deepen the economic relationship in other areas”, he said, highlighting the strategic importance that Senegal has in the West African region, as well as its observer member status. of CPLP.
The permanent representative of Angola in the said organization, Ambassador Francisco Oliveira Encoge, who was also present, said that the meeting held with the Senegalese authorities will certainly help to generate new momentum within the recognized dynamic that already exists within the framework of cooperation between the CPLP and Senegal.
“At the meeting, several aspects were touched on that could mark, in the short and medium term, cooperation between the CPLP and ECOWAS, remembering that we have two members who are also members of this organization, in this case Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde”, referred.
This is the first official trip by a CPLP executive secretary to Senegal, and was also marked by meetings with the Minister of National Education, Cheikh Oumar Anne, and with the Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, Moussa Baldé.
The Executive Secretary of the CPLP also held a working meeting with the ambassadors of the Member States of the CPLP in Senegal and, also, a trip to the Cheikh Anta Diop University, where he met with the rector, Ahmadou Aly Mbaye, with language lecturers portuguese.
The visit was part of the celebrations of the World Portuguese Language Day, celebrated on the 5th of May.
As part of the rotation, Angola succeeded Cape Verde in the presidency of the organization in the 2021-2023 biennium, and its mandate should end in July this year.
The member states of the CPLP are Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor. Senegal holds, since 2008, the category of Associate Observer of the CPLP, thus being one of the first countries to obtain that status.
